Medium: Oil on Canvas | Size: 22”x 30”

Retail Value: $5,000
Starting Bid: $2,500
Bid Increment: $500

Reza Shadzi is by vocation an architect, and by vocation and avocation a painter. Considered one of the great watercolorists of his generation, he has also created many new innovative canvases in other mediums. Some forty years ago, Houshang Golshiri, himself a preeminent modernist artist of contemporary Iran, writing about a retrospective of Shadzi’s drawings and water colors of the city of Bushehre, praised “the awe-inspiring details” of the sketches as well as the “simple but deep” mystery of his watercolors. In 2015, a critic covering a retrospective of Shadzi’s art in Isfahan, wrote of the “enduring” nature of his myriad-styled works.

The painting here is entitled “Labyrinth” and captures in graceful expressive lines, and vivid colors, not just the troubled entangled web of our human condition but also the ennobling possibility of redemption through, and in, art.

“I used to be very cautious about telling people of my accident and having people know that I am in a wheelchair because I have never wanted people to feel sorry for me. But now that things are finally moving in the right direction for me I feel comfortable enough to talk about my tragedies which have led me to triumphs and I am only looking forward to putting more of my work out for all to see. The point of my work is not to send a sort of powerful message, the point of my work is to make my audiences stop and question what they see, and to become challenged by my work and if that happens to people then I think I have done my job as an artist.”

Today, Afshin is a world renowned artist. His vast canvases are the foundation for layers upon layers of oil, resin and glossy photographic imagery. Western women flaunt themselves in various stages of undress while Eastern women peer out modestly from their burqas, and we are forced to consider the nature of exploitation and oppression in the artist’s enhanced versions of reality.
